What does it taste like? How much should I use?

I don't use it for the taste. If I want taste, I go to the fair and get a turkey leg.

Wheatgrass is serious nutrition and even referred to as medicine. It is extremely rich and concentrated. The taste is very sweet and potent, varying in intensity with the age of the grass. The older grass, after 10 days and approaching 8 inches tall is more mellow to use.

Reactions to the nutrient and energy concentration in wheatgrass vary from person to person. I experience a "shimmy" almost every time I use 2 ounces or more and will experience a hair standing on end energetic effect for a minute or so afterwards. Both my wife and myself wince when we see the other coming with the daily dose but experience has proven that we both need it. We don't buy insurance or get sick and need the energy to keep up with children.

It is best taken on an empty stomach a little while before eating allowing the enzymes and nutrients to enhance the utilization of the regular food that is eaten.

It is recommended to begin lightly using only 1/2 to 1 liquid ounce. Many users like to "chase the shot" with a drink of water or juice. After adjusting to the effect, the amount can be increased gradually. Therapeutic doses are 2 ounces twice a day and some therapies use more and also include enema infusions of 4 ounces in a comfortable amount of water.

Speaking of which, wheatgrass keeps one regular which is a wonderful fringe benefit. Some new users however, underestimating the detoxifying effects of wheatgrass juice, and the ability of the liver to discharge suddenly, will overdose themselves thinking that "more is better" and suddenly find themselves in dispose. (smile) This happened to a local motorcycle officer who in his manly manner chugged 4 ounces, the first time he had ever used wheatgrass, got on his bike, left the parking lot and promptly soiled his britches.

Most regular users settle into a comfortable routine of 2 ounces once a day or whenever they can get it for health maintenance. (Back to top of page)

Enzyme talk

There's a lot of talk about enzymes lately and their importance in so many body functions. I'm not a doctor, but I do know from decades in horticulture, that in plants, enzymes are involved in an huge number of and nearly every cellular activity. Many of the same functions of enzymes in plants also apply to more complex living systems. (like us)

The liver produces some 24,000,000.... er, 240,000?......., lots of different enzymes. Without them...... well, your dead. Wheatgrass appears to, aside from containing lots of enzymes within itself, produce a very healthy liver. Now that's going to snowball into a powerful bunch of these little fellows.

Minerals are useless without an enzyme coefficient to hook up to. These partnered little pairs are really smart about where to go and what to do when they travel together. The minerals without the enzymes are just sort of randomly floating about with a slim chance of doing any good.

Dogs eat grass for the enzymes to help with digestion. There's an innate intelligence there. We could do with a little of that. (Back to top of page)

Body building

Linda is a weight trainer that I know and often saw drinking a double shot at the juice bar. She told me "I can eat well, take all kinds of proteins and supplements, but it all really kicks in when I add the wheatgrass. It really makes the difference." Lots of gyms are now offering wheatgrass at their health bars.

Wheatgrass has a huge spread of amino acids including all the essentials and quite a few extras.. In itself, it is a complete food, but when used before eating a meal, it really fills in the protein gaps. When you add to that, the improved digestion, and then the live enzyme-mineral uptake enhancement, you get maximum efficiency from all your food. Animals in studies responded as if they had been given steroids.

Aside from the well placed muscle, Linda's overall glow, skin tone, hair, clear eyes speak for the overall beauty that comes from regular use.

That brings us to Bonnie.

Beauty

Bonnie is a (glowing) beautician who also showed up at a the juice bar daily for her double shot. When I heard she used wheatgrass, I asked her about it. She told me, "Wheatgrass is awesome. I drink it every day. My hair really responds and it's really good for my skin. My nails really started growing when I started using it. And the energy is incredible. It really makes me feel good. It's kind of expensive to buy at the juice bar, but I wouldn't want to go without it."

I figured that if this stuff was making everything glow with health skin deep, that it must be making all the insides glow too.

Healing and detoxification

In my own opinion, wheatgrass doesn't heal. Life heals. Bodies heal. DNA heals. Cellular intelligence heals. Belief heals. Prayer heals. Rest heals. Serenity heals. Nutrition heals.

Healing is like breathing. It just happens.... constantly. When it stops happening or slows, degeneration of all sorts can begin. Removing the obstacles that block those normal activities, and providing the stuff to build with is our part.

People come from all over the world to the Hippocrates Institutes for cures for everything from overweight ness to the worst cancers. One of the resorts, The Optimum Health Institute lies just outside of Austin Texas, about 30 minutes from where I'm sitting. During their 2 or 3 week stays, clients take it easy, drink 2 ounces of wheatgrass a couple of times a day, eat fresh live food, take colonics and the likes including colonic "infusions" (kids, don't try this at home) of 4 ounces of wheatgrass mixed with some water. Theory is that this infusion causes discharges from the liver.

(I believe it. A new user who overdoses will get a "discharge" within minutes. I don't believe that a couple of ounces can go through the stomach, and the what.... 40 feet of small then large intestine, and then purge the colon in a few minutes. The liver discharges... in my own opinion of course. And in the opinion of the motorcycle officer 1st time drinker who was sure that more is better till he got out of the parking lot and hit the throttle.)

Its a serious business there at the institute. They not only lose the fat, but the testimonies of all kinds of healing are numerous, including the disappearance of tumors. Now I still don't believe that wheatgrass dissolves tumors. However I do believe that wheatgrass causes a detoxifying effect that reduces the stress load on the system, supplies ample energy and the rebuilding blocks necessary to empower the immune system to do it's job.

One day when I was especially burned out on the mundane work of growing, packing, delivering, growing, packing and so on with no vacations, I ran into a woman at the juice bar who was gulping down a big double shot. I thanked her for using our wheatgrass and she said to me, with a very serious and sobering look, "No, thank you for making it available to us. I need it. Wheatgrass cured my cancer that was supposed to be incurable while I stayed at the Optimum Health Institute. I need it to keep the cancer away."

That made me feel really really good about the labor.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no saint. I call my home and operation "The Somewhat Less Than Optimal Health Institute" because, I eat some homegrown red meat, I smoke a pipe, don't get enough veggies and probably don't exercise enough. But I am extremely active and rarely get sick. When I do, it passes very rapidly. I don't use doctors, drugs, insurance or even vitamins. I have a double shot almost every day. (Back to top of page)

Anti-aging.

Yes, it's also high in antioxidants. I can"t pronounce these. Get the Book for more info. A surprising number of my customers are well on in years and also look fabulous. (I'm sure they won't mind me telling you.)

I have 2 possible explanations:

1. Wheatgrass really might be, as I have heard it called, "The fountain of Youth"
mmor
2. Old timers who look fabulous are attracted to green juices that tastes like the bottom of a lawnmower.

In a nut shell, people will drive for miles and spend a lot of money to drink wheatgrass because they don't want to get sick, want to get better or want to look and feel great. Others grow and juice at home.
